Makenna Gonzales is a graduate-level counseling intern with a strong passion for supporting children, preteens, and teens as they navigate the unique challenges and adventures of growing up. Her professional experience has been centered around working with children of all ages, abilities, and needs. She is especially drawn to working with children on the autism spectrum, helping them develop coping strategies and practical tools to support their daily lives.
Children come to therapy for many reasons—from managing anxiety, emotional regulation, or social difficulties, to working through grief, divorce, trauma, school transitions, or behavioral challenges. Makenna believes in meeting each child where they are, offering a safe and supportive space for them to explore their feelings, build confidence, and learn healthy ways to cope with life’s ups and downs.
Since earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Family and Human Development from Arizona State University in 2019, Makenna has been pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling — all while raising two young children. Her personal experience as a mother informs her clinical work and deepens her understanding of the joys and complexities of parenting. She is particularly passionate about supporting mothers through the transformative journey of motherhood, including the identity shifts that often arise during pregnancy, postpartum, and the early years of parenting.
Makenna brings creativity, compassion, and mindfulness into her counseling work. She believes these approaches are powerful tools for navigating life’s challenges and integrates them into sessions in meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways. She tailors the therapeutic process to each client’s needs and draws from a variety of modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based practices, play therapy, and art therapy.
