A Gentle Guide to Making Mental Health Care More Accessible (and Less Overwhelming)

You’ve been thinking about starting therapy. You know it could help. You know you deserve support.

But then… the practical questions hit.

Is therapy covered by insurance?
What plans are accepted?
How much will I have to pay out of pocket?
Is this going to be complicated?

At Mesa Family Therapy, we understand that navigating insurance can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already dealing with stress, anxiety, family challenges, or emotional burnout.

That’s why we’re committed to making the process as clear and supportive as possible.

We proudly accept a wide range of insurance providers—and we’re here to walk you through how to find out if your sessions are covered, and why using your insurance benefits for therapy is one of the most important investments you can make in your mental health.

How to see if therapy is covered by insurance?

The good news? Most insurance plans do include mental health coverage—and in many cases, therapy is considered an essential service.

Here’s how to check if therapy is covered by insurance for your plan:

  1. Call the number on the back of your insurance card.

Ask directly: “Do I have mental health benefits? Is outpatient therapy covered? What’s my copay or coinsurance?”

  1. Ask about in-network providers.

Make sure the therapist or practice you’re seeing is in-network. At Mesa Family Therapy, we’re proud to be in-network with several major providers (see below).

  1. Check for session limits.

Some plans have a cap on the number of sessions per year, or require prior authorization. Make sure you ask so there are no surprises.

  1. Use your provider’s online portal.

Most insurance companies have online tools where you can search for covered therapists or review your mental health benefits.

  1. Let us help you.

We’re happy to verify your benefits and explain your options. Reach out and we’ll check everything for you—so you can focus on healing, not paperwork.

Why use insurance for therapy?

There’s a common hesitation when it comes to using insurance for therapy. Some people worry about privacy, confusion with billing, or being limited to “only certain therapists.” But when done right—and with a provider you trust—utilizing your insurance can actually enhance your care.

Here’s why using insurance to get therapy covered by insurance is worth it:

  • It makes therapy more affordable.

Insurance significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs—sometimes down to just a small copay.

  • It allows for consistency.

When therapy is affordable, you’re more likely to attend regularly and build lasting change.

  • It normalizes mental health care.

Just like going to the doctor or dentist, seeing a therapist shouldn’t be a luxury. It’s care. Period.

  • You don’t have to sacrifice quality.

At Mesa Family Therapy, we’re committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care—whether you’re paying privately or through insurance.

What if I don’t have insurance or my plan isn’t accepted?

If you’re not currently insured or have a plan we don’t take yet, don’t worry—you still have options:

  • Ask about private pay rates.
We offer competitive self-pay options and will work with you to find a plan that fits your budget.

  • Use out-of-network benefits.
Some plans reimburse for therapy even if the provider isn’t in-network. We can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance.

  • Explore EAPs or HSA/FSA funds.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and Health Savings Accounts can also help cover mental health services.

Our goal at Mesa Family Therapy is to remove as many barriers to care as possible. Whether or not you’re insured, you deserve support—and we’ll help you access it.
